What Does Cradle to Cradle Mean? Multi-Attribute Levels from Bronze to Platinum

By CleenBeez Team

General
Cradle to Cradle

Cradle to Cradle Certified® is a multi-attribute product certification. Bronze is still certified; level matters.

What it means

Cradle to Cradle Certified is administered by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute (C2CPII). It evaluates products against continuous-improvement criteria rooted in Cradle to Cradle design principles (McDonough & Braungart). The current Full Scope Product Standard is Version 5.0 (released 10 Feb 2026; effective 16 Mar 2026).

Full Scope assesses five key categories:

  1. Material Health
  2. Product Circularity
  3. Clean Air & Climate Protection
  4. Water & Soil Stewardship
  5. Social Fairness

Achievement levels per category: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum. Overall product level equals the lowest category level achieved. Separate related offerings include Material Health and Circularity certifications derived from the V5 family.

Who backs it

  • Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute (C2CPII) sets the standard and runs the certification program (c2ccertified.org).
  • Conformity Assessment Bodies (accredited assessors) evaluate products.
  • Certified products are listed in the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Registry.

How it’s tested / verified

  • Application against the published Product Standard (Full Scope V5.0 or applicable prior version still in force for existing certificates until transition).
  • Assessment by authorized Conformity Assessment Bodies; documentation of materials, chemistry, circularity pathways, manufacturing impacts, social fairness, plus packaging and animal-welfare requirements when applicable.
  • Site visit of the final manufacturing facility required (per certification manual framing for the program).
  • Certificate validity historically three years with recertification (V4.1 documentation; confirm V5 certificate term in the current manual if exact V5 term is needed).
  • Public registry listing with scorecard by category.

What it doesn’t mean

  • Not the same as biodegradable, compostable, or recycled-content-only claims.
  • Not a company-wide B Corp seal (product-level versus company-level).
  • Bronze is still certified. Do not imply all C2C products are Platinum Material Health.
  • Does not automatically equal USDA Organic, vegan, or fragrance-free.
  • Not the same as EPA Safer Choice, Green Seal, or MADE SAFE.

Pros

  • Deep chemistry, circularity, and social multi-attribute rigor rare among consumer seals.
  • Continuous-improvement levels encourage reformulation over time.
  • Increasing recognition in green building and procurement frameworks (program cites LEED, DGNB, WELL, Amazon CPF, and others).

Cons / limitations

  • Complex; shoppers may not understand Bronze versus Gold.
  • Cost and time of assessment can limit smaller brands.
  • Version transitions (4.1 to 5.0 in 2026) mean older Education copy may be outdated.
  • Certification of one product line does not cover a brand’s entire catalog.

How to shop for it

Check the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Registry for the product and note the overall level and category scorecard. Prefer knowing Bronze versus Platinum rather than treating all C2C marks as equal.

Bottom line

C2C is a rigorous, leveled product certification across five categories. Always note the version and achievement level when known.

Writing notes

  • C2C V5 effective 16 Mar 2026. State certificate version/level when known; Bronze ≠ Platinum.
  • Soft gap: exact V5 certificate term should be confirmed in current manual if needed.
  • Distinguish from EPA Safer Choice and Green Seal.
  • CleenBeez does not stock or sell products; editorial explanation only.
