What Does MADE SAFE Certified Mean? Banned Lists and Ecosystem Screening

By CleenBeez Team

General
MADE SAFE Certified

MADE SAFE® (Made With Safe Ingredients™) is a product certification from Nontoxic Certified. It is not EPA Safer Choice, EWG Verified, or USDA Organic.

What it means

Certified products are screened so that substances on MADE SAFE’s Banned / Restricted List (program states 15,000+ substances) are avoided or constrained, with an “Ecosystem Approach” evaluating impacts on people and ecological compartments (air, water, soil, sediment, aquatic and terrestrial life) in the context of intended use.

Companies must disclose known added substances beyond basic front-of-pack ingredient lists and submit detailed ingredient specifications. The seal is granted per product that passes screening.

Who backs it

  • MADE SAFE / Nontoxic Certified (madesafe.org).
  • Standard maintenance: annual review cycle; Version 1.3 cited as updated/reviewed March 2025 on the certification standards page.
  • Partnerships noted by MADE SAFE include Amazon Climate Pledge Friendly, B Lab ecosystem visibility, and Wayfair Shop Sustainably. Partnership is not automatic dual certification.

How it’s tested / verified

  1. Company discloses all known intentionally added substances and materials and manufacturing-process information required by the program.
  2. Screening against Banned/Restricted List plus Ecosystem Approach evaluation for intended use; precautionary posture when evidence is insufficient (per program description).
  3. Certification granted for specific product(s); seal use authorized for certified items.
  4. Standard updated annually (Q1 cycle described by MADE SAFE).

Exact lab analytical panels used case-by-case: UNKNOWN beyond the program’s literature/modeling/screen approach without the full standard PDF excerpt in the research pack. See the downloadable Certification Standard on madesafe.org.

What it doesn’t mean

  • Not EPA Safer Choice or EWG Verified (different NGO/government criteria).
  • Not a fragrance-free guarantee unless the certified formula is fragrance-free.
  • Not organic / USDA seal.
  • Not a company-wide B Corp substitute (though MADE SAFE notes B Lab partnership messaging).

Pros

  • Very large restricted substance list plus ecosystem framing beyond human tox alone.
  • High transparency demand on applicants.
  • Consumer-facing seal for personal care and household goods.

Cons / limitations

  • Private standard; methodologies may be debated.
  • Application burden may limit brand participation.
  • “Nontoxic” in branding is aspirational language. Stick to the program’s own safer, ecosystem-sound framing in Education.

How to shop for it

Look for the MADE SAFE seal on the specific product (not just the brand). Do not treat it as EWG Verified or Safer Choice.

Bottom line

MADE SAFE is a private product screen against a large banned/restricted list with an ecosystem framing. Keep it separate from Safer Choice, EWG Verified, Green Seal, and C2C.
