What Does Non-GMO Project Verified Mean? The Butterfly Standard

By CleenBeez Team

General
Non-GMO Project Verified

Non-GMO Project Verified is a third-party product verification mark from the Non-GMO Project. It is not the same as a generic “Non-GMO” pack claim.

What it means

Non-GMO Project Verified means products enrolled in the Product Verification Program (PVP) are evaluated against the published Non-GMO Project Standard. Version 17 of the Standard was published October 1, 2026 (per Project announcement on the Standard page).

The program aims for meaningful, achievable, consistent supply-chain standards for GMO avoidance, including documentation, segregation and traceability expectations, and testing or affidavit strategies for high-risk inputs as specified in the Standard and PVP rules.

Who backs it

  • Non-GMO Project (nongmoproject.org) owns the butterfly logo.
  • A Standards Committee and Board Standards Oversight Committee maintain the Standard with public comment revisions.
  • Technical administrators and approved laboratories support verification operations (details in PVP program documents).

How it’s tested / verified

  1. Brand enrolls products in the Product Verification Program.
  2. Evaluation against the current Non-GMO Project Standard plus Program Rules and Procedures.
  3. Supply-chain documentation, segregation and cleanout, and traceability; testing or affidavits for high-risk ingredients as required by the Standard version in force.
  4. Ongoing compliance to maintain Verified status and mark use.
  5. Standard revisions via public comment. Version 17 became effective on its publication date (1 Oct 2026).

Exact action thresholds and testing percentages should be cited from the current Standard PDF. The research pack does not invent those numbers.

What it doesn’t mean

  • Not a generic “Non-GMO” claim without the Project mark.
  • Not USDA Organic (different program; dual certification is possible).
  • Not proof of pesticide-free, regenerative, or fair trade.
  • Not non-GMO status for ingredients outside the verified product’s scope.

Pros

  • Widely recognized private Non-GMO mark in North America.
  • Published consensus standard with public comment governance.
  • Butterfly logo is consumer-checkable against Project product listings.

Cons / limitations

  • Private standard, not a federal certification.
  • Version changes (v16.1 to v17 in 2026) may affect participant timelines.
  • Does not address all “clean beauty” chemistry concerns.

How to shop for it

Look for the butterfly logo and the full name “Non-GMO Project Verified.” Confirm listings on the Project’s site when you want extra assurance. Do not treat a bare “Non-GMO” phrase as the same thing.

Bottom line

Non-GMO Project Verified is third-party verification against a published standard. Keep it separate from generic Non-GMO marketing and from USDA Organic.

Writing notes

  • Always show butterfly / “Non-GMO Project Verified” full name.
  • Soft gap: exact v17 threshold numbers not pasted into the research pack. Prefer downloading v17 PDF before quoting action limits.
  • CleenBeez does not stock or sell products; editorial explanation only.
